Isabela

Coastal province of northeast Luzon Island in the Philippines; area 10,665 sq km/ 4,118 sq mi; population (1995) 1,161,000. The capital is Ilagan. The province is mountainous and covered with forests; the River Cagayan flows through it. Isabela is a major tobacco-producing region; other products include coffee, sugar cane, rice, and corn, and cattle are raised.

Nomadic Negrito people live in the province.

Isabela

Community in the northwest of the island of Puerto Rico; population (1990) 13,500. This resort is situated on the Atlantic coast, 29 km/18 mi west of Arecibo, and is known for its picturesque whitewashed houses and surf-pounded beaches.

Isabela forms part of the larger Isabela Municipio; population (1990) 39,100. Its industries produce footwear and textiles, and it is also a market centre for locally grown sugar cane, tobacco, coffee, fruits, and vegetables. Horses are raised in the south of the Municipio.

Isabela

Town in Negros Occidental province on Negros Island in the Philippines; population (1990) 47,000. The main industry is sugar refining.
