Isauria

Ancient district of Asia Minor. In Roman times it was a centre of piracy. Subdued by the Roman soldier and politician Publius Servilius in 78 BC, Isauria soon rebelled and was not thoroughly subjugated until the reign of Justinian (6th century AD). Two of the Byzantine emperors were Isaurians: Zeno (AD 474-91) and Leo III (718-41).
