Isherwood, Benjamin (Franklin) (1822–1915)

US naval officer and engineer. His observations and experiments led to his Experimental Researches in Steam Engineering 1863, 1865 which became a standard text. As chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering 1862–70 he facilitated the growth of the steam navy.

Born in New York City, he entered the naval engineer corps in 1844 and became the chief engineer in 1848.
