Ishpeming

City in Marquette County, in the north of Michigan's Upper Peninsula; population (1990) 7,200. It is situated in a region of the Marquette Iron Range inundated by lakes, 21 km/13 mi southwest of Marquette.

The city was founded in 1844 as an iron-mining centre. Nowadays, marble mines are located here, together with sawmills and an explosives factory. Ishpeming has been a ski resort since the 1880s; it now hosts an annual international ski-jumping tournament and is home to the National Ski Hall of Fame. The nuclear chemist Glenn Seaborg was born here in 1912.
