Isle La Motte

Island in Lake Champlain, in Grand Isle County, in the far northwest of Vermont, 21 km/13 mi northwest of St Albans.

Isle La Motte is roughly 9 km/5.5 mi long from north to south and 3 km/2 mi wide. Bridges link it to South Alburg, and from there to the Hero Islands. In 1665, the French established the first European settlement in Vermont here, at Fort Sainte Anne. It was later abandoned, but new settlers in the late 18th century founded the town of Isle La Motte; population (1990) 410.
