Isle Royale

The largest of the islands in Lake Superior, covering an area of 544 sq km/210 sq mi, and measuring 72 km/45 mi in length and 14 km/9 mi across (at its widest point). Isle Royale is administratively part of Michigan, and stands offshore from Grand Portage, Minnesota, and 100 km/60 mi southeast of Thunder Bay, Ontario. It now forms part of the extensive Isle Royale National Park (area 2,314–sq km/893–sq mi), which includes nearby islets and surrounding waters.

This rugged, glaciated island is noted for its moose and wolves, both of which are 20th-century arrivals from the mainland. It has 266 km/165 mi of trails. Copper mining took place here in the 19th century, and the island was a resort before becoming a park in 1931. It is reached by ferry from Houghton and Copper Harbor, Michigan, or from Grand Portage.
