Isle au Haut

Island township in Knox County, south-central Maine; population (1990) 40. Isle au Haut lies in the Atlantic Ocean, 10 km/6 mi south of Stonington, Deer Isle.

The township of Isle au Haut consists of three large islands, plus a number of smaller ones, which together cover a total area of about 32 sq km/12 sq mi. They were first sighted and named by the explorer Samuel Champlain in 1604. About half the area lies within Acadia National Park. The main industries are lobster catching, fishing, and tourism. Mount Champlain, the highest point on the islands, rises to 166 m/543 ft above sea level.
