Isle of Palms

Island city, 8 km/5 mi long, in Charleston County, southeastern South Carolina; population (1990) 3,700. One of the Sea Islands, it lies on the Atlantic Ocean (south) and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (north), 16 km/10 mi east of Charleston.

The Isle of Palms is particularly susceptible to frequent changes in shoreline, due to tidal erosion and sand being redeposited elsewhere. Extensive resort and residential development began in the 1970s, and the island now contains a mix of rural cottages, elegant apartment blocks, and opulent villas. The island is reached by bridge from Sullivan's Island, to the southwest.
