Isleta Pueblo

Village in Bernalillo and Valencia counties, central New Mexico; population (1990) 2,900. Isleta, one of the oldest pueblos in the state, is situated on the Rio Grande, 21 km/13 mi south of Albuquerque.

Isleta Pueblo is comprised of several small settlements, and forms the largest Tiwa-speaking community in New Mexico. The original village on the site, first sighted in 1540 by Spanish explorers, was abandoned during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680; refugees later established Ysleta del Sur near El Paso in Texas.
