Islip

Unincorporated village in Suffolk County, on the South Shore of Long Island in New York State; population (1990) 18,900. Located on Great South Bay, it is one of the oldest villages on Long Island. The name Islip also refers to the larger town (population 299,600) that includes the village and a number of other South Shore communities.

The village was settled in the late 1600s by immigrants from Islip, near Oxford, England. Primarily residential, its economy is based on fishing (especially for clams) and tourism. Summer visitors are attracted by the beaches and Heckscher State Park, which lies just to the southeast. The other settlements within Islip town include Brentwood, Bay Shore, and Central Islip. Long Island MacArthur Airport lies to the northeast of the town.
