isolationismIn politics, concentration on internal rather than foreign affairs; a foreign policy having no interest in international affairs that do not affect the country's own interests. .BTXT: In the USA, isolationism is usually associated with the Republican Party, especially politicians of the Midwest (for example, the Neutrality Acts 1935–39). Intervention by the USA in both world wars was initially resisted. Today it is usually associated with the Republican Party, especially politicians of the Midwest (for example, the Neutrality Acts 1935–39). Intervention by the USA in both World Wars was initially resisted. In the 1960s some Republicans demanded the removal of the United Nations from American soil. There has been resistance to use of official US military forces without clearly defined objectives in pursuit of an important national interest. This so-called Vietnam Syndrome was largely dissipated during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George Bush, who reasserted international involvements and military action.
