Isparta

Capital of Isparta province in southwest Turkey, 112 km/70 mi north of Antalya; population (2000) 148,500. Situated 30 km/19 mi southwest of Lake Eǧridirin, it occupies a mountainous site below the peaks of Davras Daǧlari (2,635 m/8,645 ft) and Akdaǧ (2,276 m/7,467 ft). Carpets and textiles are manufactured, and roses cultivated locally for their oils.

History

The town was founded by Greeks from Sparta, and retained a large Greek presence until the formation of the Republic of Turkey and subsequent deportations.

Local features

The ancient ruins of Sagalassos lie 8 km/5 mi to the south, comprising a theatre, almost intact, and the remains of a basilica, royal palace, and tombs.
