Issaquah

City in King County, west-central Washington State; population (1990) 7,800. Issaquah is located on Issaquah Creek at the foot of the Cascade Range, 3 km/2 mi southeast of Lake Sammamish and 24 km/15 mi southeast of Seattle.

Issaquah became a coalmining boom town after the arrival of the Seattle Pacific and Lakeshore Railroad in the 1880s. Lumbering has been a significant industry since about 1900, and agriculture has grown in economic importance since hops were first raised here in 1885. A centre of flour milling and dairy farming, it is now also a trading hub for the valley. Other economic concerns here are a confectionery factory and a salmon hatchery. Issaquah also benefits from tourism to the surrounding areas of natural beauty.
