Istar

Symphonic variations by Vincent d'Indy, Op. 42, first performed in Brussels, Belgium, on 10 January 1897. The work is based on the Babylonian legend of Ishtar's descent into limbo, and illustrates her disrobing at the seven stations of her progress by the devices of presenting the variations first, in diminishing complexity, and stating the theme only at the end, in bare octave unison.
