Istel, Edgar (1880–1948)

German musicologist. He studied at Munich, and studied composition with Fritz Volbach and Ludwig Thuille, and musicology with Adolf Sandberger. He lived and taught there until 1913, when he went to Berlin as lecturer on music. In 1920 he was in Madrid, Spain, and later moved to the USA. His books include works on Wagner, Peter Cornelius, Paganini, and especially on various aspects of opera.
