Suez, Isthmus of

Strip of land in northeastern Egypt connecting Asia and Africa, through which the Suez Canal runs; minimum width 116 km/72 mi. The isthmus lies between the Gulf of Suez in the south and the Mediterranean Sea in the north. It is mainly an arid, desert region, with its lowest depressions consisting of marshes and salt lakes.
