Itaipu Dam

World's largest hydroelectric plant, situated on the Paraná River on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. A joint Brazilian-Paraguayan venture, it came into operation in 1984 and has a capacity of 12,600 megawatts. It supplies hydroelectricity to a wide area, including most of Paraguay and the industrial areas of southern Brazil.

An estimated 10,000 people were displaced to make way for the massive 14,000-MW Itaipu dam, the world's second largest, which is shared by Brazil and Paraguay (see NotiSur, 2009-06-19, 2009-07-31).
Parts of neighbouring Paraguay, which also receives power from the Itaipu dam, were also affected.
10 The south-eastern border is formed by the Parana River, containing the Itaipu dam that Brazil shares.
