Italian Somaliland

Former Italian trust territory on the south Somali coast of Africa extending to 502,300 sq km/193,900 sq mi. Established in 1889-90, it was extended in 1925 with the acquisition of Jubaland from Kenya. It was administered from Mogadishu. In 1936 it was united with Ethiopia to form Italian East Africa. It fell under British rule 1941-50. Thereafter it reverted to Italian authority before uniting with British Somaliland in 1960 to form the independent state of Somalia.
