Itta Bena

City in Leflore County, west-central Mississippi, in the Delta, 14 km/9 mi west-southwest of Greenwood; population (1990) 2,400.

The name Itta Bena is thought to mean ‘home in the woods’ in the Choctaw language. However, the settlement has stood amid open cottonfields since the mid-19th century, and was a major centre for trading, processing, and shipping the crop. It is also home to Mississippi Valley State University (founded 1946); historically a centre for Black education, this institution was threatened with closure under a state reorganization plan announced in 1992.
