iTunes

Software application that plays digital media such as video and audio files iTunes was first launched by Apple Corp in 2001 to accompany its range of iPod digital music devices.

iTunes can import tracks from a user's music CD, or can download music and other media files from the iTunes Store, which is Apple's on-line music shop. iTunes can be used to play the media files on a computer, and when an iPod is connected to the computer the media files are automatically synchronized onto the iPod.

In 2006 the one billionth song was downloaded from iTunes, and the lucky customer was rewarded with a computer, a number of iPods, and a $10,000 iTunes card. In January 2007 Apple announced that the number of songs downloaded had exceeded 2 billion.
