Iturbi, José (1895-1980)

Spanish pianist and conductor. As a child he studied in Barcelona, and afterwards played in cafés to earn money. He later studied in Paris at the Conservatory, and graduated in 1912. He started teaching at the Geneva Conservatory in 1919 and in 1923 began his career as a concert pianist. He conducted the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra 1936-44.
