Iuka

City and seat of Tishomingo County, in the far northeast of Mississippi; population (1990) 3,100. The city lies 35 km/22 mi southeast of Corinth, 6 km/4 mi west of the Alabama border and Pickwick Lake (the Tennessee River), and 21 km/13 mi south of the Tennessee border.

Located in a forested region, Iuka contains sawmills that process pine lumber, and also manufactures building materials. Tourism is another source of revenue; the J P Coleman and Tishomingo state parks and Woodall Mountain are in the vicinity. Iuka was the scene of an early Civil War battle (19-20 September 1862), in which Union soldiers commanded by William S Rosecrans repelled attacking Confederate forces led by Sterling Price. There are a number of fine antebellum homes in the town.
