Ives, James

Ives, James (Merritt) (1824–1895)

US publisher. He became bookkeeper to the printmaker Nathaniel Currier in 1852. Soon he was not only overseeing the various artists who produced the original drawings but he himself would make some of his own. He was made a partner in 1857 after which the name Currier & Ives appeared on hundreds of prints, posters, and handbills.

He was born in New York City.
