Opera by Christoph Willibald von Gluck (libretto by L Anseaume on a fable by La Fontaine), first produced at the Burgtheater, Vienna, Austria, in April 1760. It tells how the drunkard Mathurin is reformed by a chorus of demons in disguise. In the process he allows his niece to marry the man of her choice.
