Izhevsk

Capital city, economic and cultural centre of the Republic of Udmurt, west-central Russian Federation, 275 km/171 mi northeast of Kazan; population (1996 est) 655,000. Izhevsk is situated on the River Izh, and is an important centre for engineering (motorcycles, small arms), and metal production. A car factory began production here in 1970.

Izhevsk was founded in 1760 as an iron foundry, was destroyed during the Pugachev rebellion in 1774, and was made a town in 1918. It was briefly (1918–19) held by ‘White’ (counter-revolutionary) forces during the Russian Civil War.

From 1985–91, Izhevsk was known as Ustinov, in honour of the Soviet defence minister Dmitri Ustinov.
