Izu Islands

Group of eleven volcanic islands, lying to the south of Tokyo Bay, Japan. The islands, of which four are large enough for an airport, are administratively part of Tokyo. Izu-Oshima, the largest island (91 sq km/35 sq mi), is almost entirely covered by the active volcano Mihara (758 m/2,487 ft) which erupted in 1986, 1987 and 1988. The island has an active tourist industry, attracted by its mild climate. Camellia oil is a local speciality.

The islands were formerly used as convict settlements during the Edo period (1600–1868).
