Jaén

Capital of Jaén province in Andalusia, southern Spain, on the River Guadalbullon; population (2001) 112,600. Textiles, chemicals, olive oil, and leather goods are produced here. It has a Renaissance cathedral, and parts of the Moorish walls and citadel remain. Jaén was captured from the Moors in 1246.

Province of southern Spain in northeast Andalusia autonomous community; area 13,480 sq km/5,205 sq mi; population (1991 est) 632,300. The rivers Guadalquivir and Segura flow through the province, and it is mountainous in the south. Jaén is traditionally a poor province which has depended overwhelmingly on olives and cereals; lead is mined here, and other products include fruit and wine. The capital is Jaén.
