Lebanon Mountains

Mountain range from which Lebanon derives its name, extending from southern Lebanon into southern Syria. The range runs along the Mediterranean coast, with spurs projecting towards the sea. The range stretches from the Nahr-el-Kebir near Tripoli, to the Litani near Tyre. To the east of the Lebanon Mountains is the Anti-Lebanon range, with the Bekaa Valley in between. The highest peak is Qurnatas-Sawda (3,083 m/10,115 ft). The mountains are composed of limestone, sandstone, and basalt.

Only a few groves of the once abundant cedars of Lebanon now remain growing on the mountains. The villages on the slopes of the mountains are popular resorts.
