Jabalpur

Industrial city near the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, India, 250 km/175 mi east of Bhopal; population (2001) 951,500. It is an important rail junction, centrally positioned to link Mumbai (formerly Bombay), Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and Delhi. Industries include textiles, cement, oil, bauxite, and armaments.

In the 12th century it was the capital of the Gond kings, and later the seat of the Kalchuri Dynasty. Under British control in the 19th century, Jabalpur was a military supply and manufacturing centre.

There is an agricultural university (1963).
