Kramer, Jack (1921– )

US tennis player and promoter. He enjoyed a successful amateur career, winning the US Open (1946, 1947) and Wimbledon (1947), before turning professional and combining playing with tournament promotion. Kramer founded the International Grand Prix of Tennis and was the first executive director of the Association of Tennis Professionals, which represented male players.

He paved the way for tennis tournaments to become ‘open’ in 1968, when all distinctions between amateur and professional players were abolished. From 1950 he worked as a television analyst. He was elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1968.
