| English cricketer. The finest wicketkeeper in England of his generation, he made his Test debut in 1988, and by the end of his Test career had achieved 165 dismissals in 54 Tests. At Johannesburg in 1995–96 against South Africa he set a new Test record of 11 dismissals in a match. |

| He made his first-class debut for Gloucestershire in 1981 and was appointed county captain in 1995. In 1998 he announced his retirement from international cricket. In August 1999 he helped Gloucestershire to win the 1999 Benson and Hedges Super Cup – his first trophy at county level – and the 1999 Nat West Trophy. In 2000 he helped Gloucestershire to win the Benson and Hedges Cup for the second year in succession. |
