Jackson, John (1769-1845)

English pugilist. He fought only three public bouts, defeating Fewterel at Croydon in 1788 in the presence of the Prince of Wales; he was then defeated by Ingleston at Ingatestone in 1789; finally, he defeated Mendoza at Hornchurch in 1795, when he became Champion of England until his retirement in 1803. He ran a school for self-defence in Bond Street, which included Lord Byron among its young aristocratic pupils. Jackson was born in London, England.
