Jackson, Samuel L(eroy) (1948– )

US film actor. After performances in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing (1989) and Jungle Fever (1991), for which he won a Cannes Film Festival award and a New York Film Critics award for Best Supporting Actor, he went on to win critical and popular acclaim for his role in Pulp Fiction (1994).

Born in Washington, DC, Jackson was brought up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He has been active in the civil-rights movement, and was suspended from university due to his involvement in protests. Other films include The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), Jackie Brown (1997), Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999), Rules of Engagement (2000), Unbreakable (2000), Shaft (2000), Changing Lanes (2002), and Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002).
