Jackson Square

Name of two inner-city districts in the US cities of San Francisco and New Orleans. In San Francisco, Jackson Square is a commercial district in the northeast of the city that contains many of its oldest buildings, survivors of the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire. Jackson Square in New Orleans is the focal point of the old centre of the city, or Vieux Carré. Famous monuments and buildings here include a large equestrian statue of US president Andrew Jackson, St Louis Cathedral, and two imposing 18th-century government buildings, the Presbytère and the Cabildo, now museums.
