Jacobs, Arthur (1922– )

English critic, translator and editor. He was the music critic for various newspapers from 1947, and deputy editor of Opera magazine 1960–71. He lectured at the Royal Academy of Music, London, from 1964, and at Huddersfield Polytechnic 1979–85. He has translated 20 opera libretti and published A New Dictionary of Music (four editions 1958–78), Short History of Western Music, two volumes on Sullivan (1951, 1984), the Penguin Book of Musical Performers (1990), and Henry J Wood, Maker of the Proms (1994). His work is notable for its concision.
