Jacques, Hattie (1924–1980)

English comic actor. Frequently called upon to play bossy figures of authority, she was also a highly respected foil to many comedians, notably in ITMA (1948–50) and Educating Archie (1950–54), and with Eric Sykes in the BBC sitcom Sykes (1960–65, 1971–79). She also appeared in 14 of the Carry On films.

Jacques was born in Sandgate, Kent. She was a factory worker and Red Cross nurse during World War II, and made her stage debut in 1944. She toured with the Young Vic in The King Stag (1947–48) and made her first film appearance in Green for Danger (1946). Later stage work included Twenty Minutes South (1955), which she directed, and Hatful of Sykes (1979).
