James, Elmore

James, Elmore (1918–1963)

US blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. His electric slide-guitar style had great impact on rock music. He is particularly associated with the song ‘Dust My Broom’ (1952; written by Robert Johnson, his main influence), as well as ‘It Hurts Me Too’ (1952), ‘The Sky Is Crying’ (1960), and ‘Shake Your Money Maker’ (1961).

James was born in Mississippi but active mainly in Chicago from 1952.
