James (I) the Conqueror (1208-1276)

King of Aragón from 1213, when he succeeded his father. He conquered the Balearic Islands and took Valencia from the Moors, dividing it with Alfonso X of Castile by a treaty of 1244. Both these exploits are recorded in his autobiography Libre dels feyts/Chronicle. He largely established Aragón as the dominant power in the Mediterranean.
