Barry, James (1741–1806)

Irish painter. Encouraged by the British politician Edmund Burke, he studied in Italy, where he acquired Classical ambitions. His principal work was Progress of Human Culture (1777–83), a series of wall paintings for the Royal Society of Arts, London.
