Dean, James (Byron) (1931–1955)

US actor. A stage performer who had appeared in a small number of minor film roles, Dean was killed in a car accident soon after the public showing of the first film in which he starred, Elia Kazan's East of Eden (1955). He posthumously became a cult hero with Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Giant (1956). Since his death, his image has endured as the classic icon of teenage rebellion.
