Fergusson, James (1808–1886)
| Scottish architectural historian, born in Ayr, who compiled the first general history of architecture. His interest in architecture began while travelling through India as a merchant. His Handbook of Architecture appeared in 1845, was expanded into History of Architecture in 1867, and was followed by Indian and Eastern Architecture in 1876. |
| His books earned him the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Royal Gold Medal in 1876. |
