McHugh, Jimmy (1896–1969)

US composer. In the 1920s and 1930s he wrote songs for Broadway revues and Harlem's Cotton Club. With lyricist Dorothy Fields, he wrote the hits ‘I Can't Give You Anything but Love, Baby’ (1928), ‘On the Sunny Side of the Street’ (1929), and ‘I'm in the Mood for Love’ (1935). He also worked with lyricists Gus Kahn, Ted Koehler, and Harold Adamson. In the 1950s and 1960s he performed in nightclubs and on television shows. McHugh was born in Boston, Massachusetts.
