James River| River in Virginia; length 547 km/340 mi. It rises in the Allegheny Mountains in western Virginia and flows across the state, through Richmond, and into Chesapeake Bay, the largest of the inlets on the Atlantic coast of the USA. It is navigable by oceangoing ships to Richmond. The chief tributaries are the Chickahominy and the Appomattox. |
