swimsuit

One-piece stretch body garment worn by women for swimming. Introduced in the late 19th century, the swimsuit originally consisted of two garments – a long tunic and knickers – and was made of serge or wool. The one-piece garment became popular around 1900. The introduction of elasticized synthetic and fast-drying fibres subsequently enabled more flexible swimsuits to be developed.
