Jamshedpur

Industrial city in Jharkhand, India, 220 km/135 west of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) at the junction of the Kharkhai and Subarnarekha rivers; population (2001) 570,300. It was built in 1909 near the Jharia coalfield and rich deposits of iron ore, and takes its name from the industrialist Jamsheedji Tata who founded the Tata iron and steel works here and in Mumbai (formerly Bombay). The iron and steel industry has been supplemented by vehicle assembly and production of engine parts, machine tools, railway equipment, and farm machinery. Jamshedpur is the home of the National Metallurgical Laboratory.

Jamshedpur's planned growth, with open garden spaces and employee housing, has created a city with little congestion and low population density.
