Janowitz, Gundula (1937– )

German soprano. A protégée of Karajan, she sang Pamina, Mimi, and the Empress at Vienna in the early 1960s. She appeared as the Countess in Figaro and as Fiordiligi at Salzburg, and in 1967 was Sieglinde at the New York Metropolitan Opera House, when Karajan gave Die Walküre there. In 1976 she played Donna Anna at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. Other roles include Agathe, Elisabeth, Eva and Arabella. She returned to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1987 as Ariadne. She was director of the Graz Opera 1990–91.
