Janowski, Marek (1939– )

Polish conductor. He studied in Cologne and Vienna, and conducted opera in Hamburg, Munich and Berlin before becoming musical director at Freiburg im Breisgau, and then Dortmund (1973–79). He made his London debut in 1969, at the Sadler's Wells Theatre, London, conducting Henze's Der Junge Lord with the Cologne Opera, and conducted the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra 1983–86. He worked in the USA from 1980 (leading Lohengrin at Chicago), and appeared at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1984, with Arabella. With his Dresden forces he made the first compact disc recording of Wagner's Ring and conducted Meistersinger in Paris (at Châtelet) in 1990.
