5 January 1477Holy Roman Empire, France [political events]When Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, is killed by a Swiss dominated army in a battle outside Nancy, capital of the duchy of Lorraine, France, which was being besieged by the remnants of his forces, he is succeeded by his daughter Mary. However, King Louis XI of France quickly seizes the duchy and county of Burgundy and Picardy, although he faces stubborn resistance in Artois, France.
5–17 January 1583France, Spanish Netherlands [wars]French forces trying to enforce the authority of Francis, Duke of Anjou, in the Spanish Netherlands by coup de main seize Dunkirk, Ostend, Diksmuide, Aalst, Dendermonde, and Vilvoorde, but fail in two attempts on Bruges and Antwerp (17 January), in the ‘French Fury’.
