Jarnach, Philipp (1892–1982)

German composer of Catalan/French descent. He studied with the composer Ferruccio Busoni and completed his unfinished opera Doktor Faust (1925) from the material then available after Busoni's death. Further sketches were completed by Antony Beaumont for performance in 1985. Jarnach's own works, in Italianate neoclassical style, include orchestral and chamber music.

He studied piano with Edouard Risler (1873–1929) and composition with Albert Lavignac in Paris, France. In 1914 he went to Switzerland and taught counterpoint at the Zürich Conservatory 1918–21, he then settled in Berlin, Germany, and continued his studies with Busoni.

Works

Orchestral

prelude to Prometheus, suite Winterbilder (1915), Prologue to a Tournament, Sinfonia brevis, Morgenklangspiel (1925), Prelude No. 1, Musik mit Mozart for orchestra (1935).

Chamber

string quartet and quintet (1916, 1920); violin and piano sonata, two sonatas for unaccompanied violin.

Other

Konzertstück for organ; sonatina and other works for piano; songs with orchestra and with piano.
