Jaunpur

Town of Uttar Pradesh state, northern India; population (1991) 136,300. Situated on the River Gumti, 95 km/60 mi north of Varanasi, it is chiefly important as a centre for 14th and 15th century Islamic architecture. The river is spanned by the 16th-century stone Akbari bridge. The town's hinterland specializes in gardening for the perfume industry.

Jaunpur was founded in the 11th century by Gaharwar rulers, but rebuilt between 1359 and 1364 after severe floods. Its finest buildings include mosques built with the stonework of former Hindu and Jain temples.
